Hometown Season 22: Prospect and Preseason Report

So happy to be a top prospect!
Welcome to Season 22 of Hometown.  This year the season preview focuses on prospects.  Best hitter, best pitcher, and the best of the rest.  When they should come up, and what to expect.  Each team's preseason has also been graded, but this time on a more lenient pass/fail scale.  Big thanks to ejohansen13 (Scranton) for coming up with the idea and writing most of the post.  On that note, if you don't like it, please send all complaints to:

TOP HITTING PROSPECT: D. Esposito ('22, RF, another stud hitter for Texas OF)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: J. Nolan ('23, SP5/LR, better pitches = dominant reliever)
BEST OF THE REST: D. Butcher ('23, C, left-handers should IBB him everytime)
PRESEASON NOTES:  Added Alfredo Strickland to the rotation.  Now just needs a bullpen to be a real threat.
PRESEASON GRADE: PASS.

Jacksonville Shufflers
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: M. Owen ('23, 1B, professional hitter)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: B. Shiabata ('22, CL, Shutdown ala Mariano Rivera)
BEST OF THE REST: T. Munson ('25, 2B, 3 good 2B under 23 is a good problem)
PRESEASON NOTES: Added Roger Clemens.  Jacksonville is the new dark horse.  Pencil him in the for the playoffs.  And yes Jax you should be worried, I'm always wrong (See: Primetimers).
PRESEASON GRADE: PASS.

Monterrey Jack Cheese
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: D. Clements ('25, SS, Great Glove, but can he hit enough?)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: R. Stults ('24, SP2-3, better control would = ace)
BEST OF THE REST: R. Rice ('24, CL, 90+ vs R/L splits)
PRESEASON NOTES: With division rivals Jacksonville and Texas making a big splash in free agency, is the mold starting to grow on the Jack Cheese?
PRESEASON GRADE: REPEAT CLASS.

Houston Hounds
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: H. Iannetta ('24, 2B, nothing spectacular, but solid)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: A. Gil ('24, CL, good closer with a HUGE fastball)
BEST OF THE REST: M. Wilfredo ('25, CF, singles-hitter patroling CF)
PRESEASON NOTES:  Great signing with Orlando Mendoza, but this is probably the toughest division in the NL.
PRESEASON GRADE: PASS.

AL SOUTH 
Little Rock Patriots
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: E. Johnson ('24, LF, another big bat for LR)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: J. Ramirez ('23, CL,  good closer)
BEST OF THE REST: G. Haas ('24, SUA, Good vs. Righties and 3 good pitches)
PRESEASON NOTES: Didn't do much of real value, and probably needed one nice move to get back on top.
PRESEASON GRADE: FAIL.

Charlotte Banjo Hitters
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: C. Vizcaino ('23, SS, very complete player)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: D. Richard ('23, SP1, Dominant vs. righties)
BEST OF THE REST: R. Hutton ('24, LF, too bad he won't be able to play 2B)
PRESEASON NOTES: I see another 76 wins in the near future...
PRESEASON GRADE: FAIL.

Memphis Mashers
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: F. Montgomery ('23, 2B, good power at a premium position)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: J. Espinosa ('24, SUA, very durable, solid splits)
BEST OF THE REST: J. Olmos ('24, SP3, good vs. righties and good #1 pitch)
PRESEASON NOTES: "Mashing" their way to mediocrity.
PRESEASON GRADE: FAIL.

Tampa Bay Florida Retirees
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: R. Gross ('23, LF, needs to make a little more contact)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: A. Kirkland ('23, SUB, 2 90+ pitches help best they can)
BEST OF THE REST: B. Estrada ('26, SP5, 5 pitches are better than 2 pitches, right?)
PRESEASON NOTES: It's really hard to get a passing grade when you don't show up to class.
PRESEASON GRADE: FAIL.
NL EAST 
Pawtucket Patriot Ale
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: Es. Ramirez ('24, C, long line of strong batteries in Pawtucket)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: E. Balentien ('22, SUA, dominant!)
BEST OF THE REST: D. Cervantes ('22, SP3/LR, good reliever, useful in spot starts too)
PRESEASON NOTES: Signed Len Diaz to max contract when instead could've used hitting.  Normally that would result in a FAIL but also firmly established himself as a top 3 trade-rapist in Hometown (who are the others you say?) so...
PRESEASON GRADE: PASS!

New York NUTS
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: W. Vandenhurk ('24, 3B, needs more power/contact)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: J. Hall ('23, SUB, will pitch when game is out of hand)
BEST OF THE REST: K. Moore ('24, RF, nothing spectacular)
PRESEASON NOTES: New owner, added Marino Diaz for a good price.
PRESEASON GRADE: PASS.

Washington D.C. Senators
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: L. Stevenson ('22, C, recently acquired & OK behind dish)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: B. Zumaya ('23, SP1-2, top of a very good rotation by '25)
BEST OF THE REST: J. Wells ('24, LR, if he was more durable he could easily be a SP1)
PRESEASON NOTES: Is a Senator, but thinks rules are "retarded."  Yeah, that'll get you re-elected.
PRESEASON GRADE: FAIL / IMPEACHMENT.

Philadelphia Fighting Quakers
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: S. Barclay ('24, CF, he's pretty terrible)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: M. Wise ('23, SP2, another 12 of these and watch out)
BEST OF THE REST: E. Astacio ('24, SUB, 2 80+ pitches to go along with 80+ vs. R/L)
PRESEASON NOTES: Re-signed Max Mendoza to a reasonable contract.  They should call him Moderately-Priced Mendoza instead.
PRESEASON GRADE: A very surprising PASS.

AL EAST 
Buffalo Wild Wings
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: R. Julio ('23, 3B, if healthy he can challenge for HR crown)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: D. Heathcott ('24, SU/LR, beware LH hitters)
BEST OF THE REST: E. Webster ('23, 3B, logjam of CIF for Buffalo…is that a problem?)
PRESEASON NOTES: Got a haul for Herman Lewis.  But also, traded Herman Lewis.  Hmmm...
PRESEASON GRADE: SEE ME AFTER CLASS.

Chicago Curses
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: C. Easley ('24, SS, Might be best prospect in Hometown?)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: J. Brinson ('24, SUA/CL, 8th inning pitcher)
BEST OF THE REST: M. Cordero ('25, DH, big time masher, 3 hitter)
PRESEASON NOTES: Upgraded the bullpen but will that be enough?
PRESEASON GRADE: PASS.

Wichita Gnats
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: M. Weems ('24, SS, decent up the middle with OK bat)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: B. Kondou ('25, SP2, health could become an issue)
BEST OF THE REST: J. Wakeland ('24, CF, strong up the middle)
PRESEASON NOTES: Took Jayson Metcalfe away from division rival Buffalo, which is something at least.
PRESEASON GRADE: PASS.

Richmond Cavaliers
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: L. Knight ('25, RF, big power…I hope RIC plays all day games)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: J. McCracken ('25, SP1, if only he was more durable)
BEST OF THE REST: J. Prado ('24, C, good catchers that can hit are hard to come by)
PRESEASON NOTES: The AI has been running this franchise since 2/13/08.  They made some good signings this year.
PRESEASON GRADE: PASS.

NL NORTH 
Madison Rowengartners
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: Ez. Ramirez ('25, 3B, complete player and will mash)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: C. Ortiz ('22, SP1, is a SP1 on every team but ROC, now!)
BEST OF THE REST: L. Ray ('24, SP2, a little better control and he would be another ace)
PRESEASON NOTES: Got older, that's about it.
PRESEASON GRADE: FAIL.

Rochester Ramblers
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: V. James ('25, 3B, hits lefties well and solid D)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: K. Ross ('26, SUB, he blows)
BEST OF THE REST: D. Youkilis ('25, C, Good hitter might struggle behind the dish)
PRESEASON NOTES: First avoided arb-delaying Jimmie Johnson, then gave him 10.5 million in his first year of arb for no discernible reason.  However, signed Carl Paul, so...
PRESEASON GRADE: SEE ME AFTER CLASS.

Scranton Dundees
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: J. Stewart ('23, RF, leadoff hitter, good vR, contact, and eye)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: A. Keppel ('23, SP2-3, was he worth Victor James?)
BEST OF THE REST: T. Gil ('26, 2B/LF, middle of the order bat, hopefully can play 2B)
PRESEASON NOTES: Kicked the entire ML team to the curb.  Looks like he's finally building this right.
PRESEASON GRADE: PASS.

Kansas City Tornados
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: S. Lloyd ('23, 1B, not much here)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: A. Chacin ('24, SP3, 4 good to + pitches and good command)
BEST OF THE REST: B. Pestano ('24-'25, SP4, not great splits, but solid back of rotation)
PRESEASON NOTES: Made a number of smart affordable moves.  Has an outside chance a playoff spot.  Competition is his partner in crime.
PRESEASON GRADE: PASS.

AL NORTH
Toronto FivTs
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: C.M. Huang ('25, 2B, Tor's Huang is very very very big)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: A. Matos ('26, SP1, he's ok, right?)
BEST OF THE REST: J. Cedeno ('23, SUA, I know I could have picked Romo or Cervantes)
PRESEASON NOTES: Team autopilot.
PRESEASON GRADE: PASS.

Milwaukee MooMoos
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: C. Tracy ('23, DH, will crush lefties)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: A. James ('23, SUA, good against L and R and 2 + pitches)
BEST OF THE REST: G. Allen ('23, LF, should have no problem against lefties)

TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: P. Julio ('24, SP4-5, pitches lacking, but solid otherwise)
BEST OF THE REST: C. Marshall ('25, DH, good bat)
PRESEASON NOTES: Made a number of good moves and is very occasionally clever on the World Chat.  
PRESEASON GRADE: SUPER JUST PASS.

Montreal Midget Mafia
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: T. Ugueto ('24, SS, speed, durable, and power)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: K. Buchanan ('26, SP1, JJ from the left with better pitches)
BEST OF THE REST: H. McDowell ('25, SP2, lights out against lefties)
PRESEASON NOTES: Building up prospects?  Good.  Not playing them in Spring Training?  Bad.
PRESEASON GRADE: FAIL.

NL WEST 
Helena Handbaskets
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: K. Hampton ('23, 2B/LF, will die, but if a 2B, also an All-Star)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: J. Thomas ('23, SP5, nothing jumps out but can start)
BEST OF THE REST: R. Page ('22, 1B/DH, no DL trips yet, but will also probably die)
PRESEASON NOTES: Geared up for free-agency with big money to spend on a big player.  Got nothing.
PRESEASON GRADE: FAIL.


Tacoma Sounds Puget 
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: E. Schwartz ('23, SS, Power + Speed + SS = Wow!)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: S. Lowery ('23, SP6, 3 plus pitches and durable)
BEST OF THE REST: N. Pritchett ('22, RP, doesn't suck as much as the rest, but close)
PRESEASON NOTES: Possibly suffering from Stockholm Syndrome, Tacoma pleaded and begged on the World Chat to be abused and tortured by his tormentor.  He got his wish. 
Veto that trade and I'll shoot!
 PRESEASON GRADE: EPIC FAIL.

Arizona Prickly Pears
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: D. Lee ('23, LF, if only he was a better baserunner)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: C. Marte ('24, SP5/LR, solid reliever and spot starter)
BEST OF THE REST: A. Hensley ('26, SP4, 200+ innings year after year)
PRESEASON NOTES:  Arizona "ford white broncos" was the stupidest team name in Hometown, but now he's gone.  That's good.  New team name is "Prickly Pears."  That's bad.  Signed a few good free agents.  That's good.  Lost Bob Allen to free agency.  That's bad.
PRESEASON GRADE: SEE ME AFTER CLASS.

St. Louis Lunatics
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: S. Bell ('23, LF, clean-up hitter in St. Louis for years)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: D. Alexander ('23, SP5/LR, Control)
BEST OF THE REST: M. Reynolds ('25, SUA, durable SU that can dominate righties)
PRESEASON NOTES: Seems like none of the Lunatics are telling other good players, "Meet me in St. Louis!"
PRESEASON GRADE: FAIL.

AL WEST
Salem Slims 
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: D. Veras ('23, RF, power bat in corner OF)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: A. Butera ('24, SP5, solid and durable)
BEST OF THE REST: V. Vosberg ('25, SP5, also solid and durable)
PRESEASON NOTES: Traded for Herman Lewis and signed Brian Hara to a reasonable price.

Sacramento Sonics
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: C. Bennett ('24, CF, power and speed finds its way to the ML)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: R. Conine ('24, SUB, for vR only)

TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: D. Quintanilla ('22, SP1, True #1)

PRESEASON NOTES: With Damaso Quintanilla coming up, Cheyenne is a threat to Salem in the division.
PRESEASON GRADE: PASS.

Los Angeles Animal-Style Fries
TOP HITTING PROSPECT: K. Torres ('23, CF, ugly, but great defense and speed)
TOP PITCHING PROSPECT: G. Cela ('24, SP5, it's the best he's got, and it ain't good)
BEST OF THE REST: F. Flores ('23, SP5, super barren farm system)
PRESEASON NOTES: Declined the option on Esteban Cruz, and basically took over a team in purgatory and kept it there.  "This isn't bad.  It's not that good, but it's not that bad."
PRESEASON GRADE: FAIL.
